The host of the great Newbury races taking place throughout the season is, of course, the popular Newbury Racecourse located in Newbury, Berkshire, England. The course currently accommodates both racing over jumps and flat races and is also the host of the Lockinge Stakes, which is one of the most popular of the 31 Group 1 races held in Great Britain. The course itself has had quite a significant history within the world of horse racing worldwide having first hosted races in September of 1905, although it didn’t end of moving to its current location in Newbury until 1910. Some of the more notable Newbury races taking place throughout the year include the Fillies’ Trial Stakes, Fillies’ Trial Stakes, Haynes, Hanson and Clark Conditions Stakes, Hungerford Stakes, Washington Singer Stakes, and the Weatherbys Super Sprint.

The Lockinge Stakes

Perhaps the most notable of the all the Newbury races is the popular Lockinge Stakes held at the prestigious Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire, England. The race is officially reserved for thoroughbreds four years or older and is a Group 1 flat race on the Great Britain circuit. The race takes place annually in May and is currently run over a distance of 1609 metres. Over the years, since first being run in 1958, the race has come quite a long way and is now considered to be one of the most important Group 1 flat races in Britain. However, originally the race was run as a Group 2 status event reserved only for three year olds. The race was eventually switched to a Group 1 race and reserved only for thoroughbreds 4 years and older in 1995. Perhaps the main appeal to the event for competitors is the fact that the top horses will be awarded acceptance into another of the popular Newbury races, the Queen Anne Stakes. Some of the notable winners over the past few years include Virtual in 2009, Creachadoir in 2008, Red Evie in 2007, Peeress in 2006, and Rakti in 2005.

The Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup

Another extremely popular event that is hosted by the Newbury Racecourse is the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup. The race is officially a handicap race and reserved for horses four years old or older and is a Grade 3 National Hunt chase on the Great Britain race market. Currently the race consists of 21 fences and is run over a distance of 5331 metres. These days the race usually takes place near the end of November annually but sometimes its held in December. While the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup is now known as one of the Newbury races, it was originally held at Cheltenham. It wasn’t until 1960 that the race would be moved to Newbury Racecourse in Berkshire, England. Some of the most notable winners in recent years include Madison du Berlais in 2008, Denman in 2007, State of Play in 2006, Trabolgan in 2005, and Celestial Gold in 2004.
